Fruits on Film is The Garden Cinema’s carefully picked and ongoing queer cinema strand spotlighting LGBTQ+ filmmaking of the past, present, and future. Fruits on Film values screening titles that highlight a wide spectrum of queer representation. We hope to foster queer community building through screenings, events, Q&As, and more.

This August’s first harvest brings together three films that highlight underrepresented stories in queer cinema. All three films share a DIY, free-spirited, anarchic approach to image-making. We open with Gregg Araki’s raw, shot-on-16mm representation of queer youth in Totally F***ed Up, ahead of the release of his upcoming film, I Want Your Sex, later this same month. In addition to the screening, the launch event on Saturday 15 August will also include badge making and karaoke in the Atrium Bar. Following this, on Thursday 20 August we are proud to present Onda Nova (New Wave) – the almost lost, archival gem which was banned in the 1980s during the dictatorship in Brazil and restored in 2024 by the Cinemateca Brasileira. This screening will feature an introduction by Cine Brazil’s Annaís Berlim. The final film this month will be the UK premiere of the new restoration of By Hook or By Crook. This radically queer and full of heart film will be screening on Friday 28 August, and will be introduced by Emily Simmons from Crip Cinema Archive.

These are all films that refused to disappear, and we are honoured to bring them back into the limelight.
