Queer East Presents: You and I 18

Screened in partnership with Queer East
Fanny Chotimah, Indonesia, 2020, 72m.

What is it like to meet your soulmate in a hopeless place? Kusdalini and Kaminah by no means met under ideal circumstances. The year was 1965 and attempts by the Indonesian communists to seize power had failed miserably. What followed were endless purges. Kusdalini and Kaminah were both members of a communist youth organisation, and they too were locked up, sharing a cell. Since then, the two women have been inseparable. Now in their 70s, they live in central Java where they make a simple living making and selling rice crackers. The documentary follows the pair as they talk about the past and show their love for each other in small but meaningful ways.

Screening as part of Queer East: We Were Always Here, a series of queer documentaries about East and Southeast Asian women and non-binary people, marking this year's LGBTQ+ History Month.

Queer East is a cross-disciplinary festival that showcases boundary-pushing LGBTQ+ cinema, moving image work and live arts from, and about, East and Southeast Asia and its diaspora communities.
