The Tracker 15

Screened in partnership with The London Australian Film Society
Rolf de Heer, Australia, 2002, 98m.

As part of its David Gulpilil retrospective, the London Australian Film Festival presents the Yolŋu actor’s first collaboration with Dutch-Australian filmmaker, Rolf de Heer.

Outstanding in his first proper lead role, Gulpilil plays the Tracker, guiding a party across the outback in 1920s Australia, in search of an Aboriginal man accused of murder. Led by the calculating and complex Fanatic (Gary Sweet), alongside the naive Follower (Damon Gameau) and weary Veteran (Grant Page), loyalties are tested and who is leading who soon becomes unclear. An exquisite drama, complemented by minimal dialogue, the paintings of Peter Coad and the songs of Archie Roach, de Heer and Gulpilil’s first collaboration is an exquisite drama, and a near-perfect metaphor for the Australian nation.
