Katharine Hepburn is Tracy Lord, the breezy socialite whose looming wedding to a dull self-made millionaire brings her ex-husband C.K. Dexter Haven (Cary Grant) back into her life. Playful on its sparkling surface but canny and insightful at its heart, the Oscar-winning screenplay by Donald Ogden Stewart (adapted from Philip Barry’s play) delivers cutting truths about romance, marriage and forgiveness while giving the nimble ensemble of actors (including an Oscar-winning James Stewart as reporter Macaulay Connor) room to tease comedy out of class conflict and shattered illusions, and drama out of an innocent drunken midnight swim. - BFI

Professor Charlotte Crofts is a Professor of Cinema Arts at the University of the West of England (UWE Bristol). She’s also the Director of Carry Comes Home festival, which aims to celebrate Cary Grant’s Bristol roots, develop new audiences for his work, and recreate the golden age of cinema-going. She has made various projects celebrating local cinema culture, including The Curzon Memories App, The Lost Cinemas of Castle Park App and The Fleapit. She has published widely on her curatorial practice and screen tourism as well as publishing video essays about Cary Grant, including one for BBC’s Inside Cinema.
