The Last Wave 15

Screened in partnership with The London Australian Film Society
Peter Weir, Australia, 1977, 106m.

As part of its David Gulpilil retrospective, the London Australian Film Festival presents a key early role for the Yolŋu actor, who brings a brooding sense of disquiet to Peter Weir’s quasi-folk horror.

Gulpilil plays Chris Lee, one of a group accused of drowning a fellow Aboriginal man in Sydney, amid freak rainstorms and other strange meteorological occurrences. Their case is assigned, pro bono, to business lawyer David Burton (Richard Chamberlain), but with none of his clients willing to talk about what happened, Burton’s increasingly terrifying apocalyptic visions lead him to think Australia may soon face destruction.

Presented in association with the Menzies Australia Institute (King’s College London).
