The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters PG

Seth Gordon, USA, 2007, 79m.

If you’re interested in American subcultures, the nature of obsession and the political workings of emerging sports, The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters is a must.

This fascinating documentary, critically acclaimed and highly regarded by staff at The Garden Cinema, follows Steve Wiebe as he attempts to break the world record score for Donkey Kong. We see Steve give his best to try to topple the record set by the gaming guru of the 1980s: Billy Mitchell. Steve is not prepared for the political backlash he receives with Billy Mitchell using all his power and influence to try to retain his throne.

The film offers something even for those with no interest in Donkey Kong or videogaming. Come for the heavy hit of 80s nostalgia, stay for the surprisingly moving story of one man's determination to fulfil the promise he made to his family.
