Tennessee Williams’ tense and heated drama set in the American South, centres on the sexual relationship between Marlon Brando as the thirty-year old guitar-playing drifter, ‘Snakeskin’ Xavier, and Anna Magnani as his employer. Magnani’s invalid husband in bed upstairs keeps watch on her and plots her destruction. Even against a screen-actor as strong as Brando, she steals the film.
