To launch our new season Made in Taiwan in style, we’re partnering up with our wonderful neighbours at Kung Fu Mama, just a few roads over on Long Acre. For the launch event, which is open to cinema members only, they’ll be providing some delightful nibbles (including their signature sun-dried noodles), allowing you to get a taste of Taiwanese cuisine.
In addition to the tasty bites, your ticket will also include a complimentary drink of your choice; either a Gold Medal beer or a non-alcoholic serving of papaya milk – both synonymous with Taiwanese culture.
After the nibbles and drinks, we’ll all head into the screen for an introduction to the season by its curator Millie Zhou, followed by a screening of the UK premiere of the new restoration of The Dull Ice Flower.
Tickets for the event are available to members only, but are restricted to 2 per person, meaning you can bring a friend along, even if they’re not a member. They are £18.50 each, which includes traditional Taiwanese nibbles and a complimentary beverage, as well as an unallocated seat for the screening. We’re very happy to share that Kung Fu Mama will be providing both halal and vegan options for this event.

About the film:
As dull-ice flowers come into bloom, art teacher Kuo Yun-tien arrives to teach in a rural village. He discovers Ku A-ming, a mischievous boy gifted with a vivid imagination and a natural talent for painting. Despite growing up in poverty, A-ming captures the world around him with an optimistic brush. When Kuo passionately recommends him for a competition, he is forced to confront the harsh realities and obstacles that stand in the way. Adapted from the novel of the same title by Taiwanese literary giant Chung Chao-cheng, the film uses an unadorned visual style to lay bare the social realities beneath everyday life. Its eponymous theme song, entwined with a tearful story of longing, has been sung and remembered across generations.
