Season Launch Party: Garden Games & The King of Kong PG

Part of Members' Events
Seth Gordon, USA, 2007, 185m.

Dust off your sporting gear and make your way to The Garden Bar for the first ever Garden Games!

In celebration of our Summer of Sport season, featuring the best of sports documentaries, we will be hosting a members' party with a competitive edge. And no need to fear working up a sweat: all activities can be completed with a drink in hand!

Not only will we be using the bar area for a variety of games, there will also be a rare opportunity to play Mario Kart on the big screen! Rack up your points, and who knows, you may be leaving with a gold medal.. Sporty attire is completely optional but may prove worth it, as we will be handing out an honorary prize for the most snazzy outfit.

Arrive at 19:30 for our coaching session, before diving head first into the competition. At 20:45 we will make our way to the screen for the medal ceremony, which will be followed by our first screening of the season - a wild card amongst our selection of sports documentaries:

The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters tells the timeless story of the struggle betwixt good and evil, carried forth on the stage of the most challenging classic arcade game of the early 80s, Donkey Kong. Two men compete to achieve an all-time world record as they guide Mario on the impossible task of rescuing the princess from a giant barrel wielding gorilla.

Mild-mannered science teacher Steve Wiebe dares to challenge master-manipulator Billy Mitchell (one of cinema’s greatest villains), and to break his stranglehold over the ‘prestigious’ Donkey Kong crown in this masterful documentary of competitive obsession. The King of Kong demonstrates how the willingness to devote one’s life to a single purpose at the expense of all else can turn even the most niche pastimes into intense sporting contests, and elevates this retro pursuit to nigh on Shakespearean drama.
