Ripples of Life 18

Part of Chinese Cinema Project
Wei Shujun , China, 2021, 123m.

The screening on Saturday 23 September 2023 will be followed up with an after-screening online Q&A with the writer director Wei Shujun, moderated by Tony Rayns.

Ripples of Life follows a big star who brings a film crew to her remote hometown for a shoot. While the production is afflicted by arguments amongst the crew, a bored local restaurant owner is caught up in the excitement when she is asked to stand-in for the star.

From one of China’s most stylish young filmmakers, Wei Shujun's Ripples of Life is his sophomore feature, following On the Border (short film - 2018) and Striding into the Wind (feature - 2020), both are selected in Cannes. His latest feature Only the River Flows ( 2023) also had its world premiere at Cannes and is set to be released in the UK in the near future.

This screening is in tandem with the film’s domestic release in September and is part of the exhibition initiative Chinese Cinema Project presented by Plus One Films, and supported by The Garden Cinema. It aims to showcase works from emerging and under-represented Chinese filmmakers via regular screenings.

Additional revenue from the donation ticket price goes directly to the Chinese Cinema Project to support future screenings.
