Amy Jolly (Marlene Dietrich), a world-weary singer arrives in Morocco on the same ship as wealthy playboy La Bessiere (Adolphe Menjou). She gets a job at a local night club and attracts the attention of Tom Brown (Gary Cooper), a handsome, womanizing soldier in the French Foreign Legion. She falls for him but is also attracted to the rich La Bessiere. Tom sees that Amy will be better off with La Bessiere, and thus withdraws his attentions. Amy – whose life has been hard and precarious - is undecided as to which man she should choose – the rich man who is generous and solicitous or the womanizing soldier who is more attractive.
