Love Massacre (4K Restoration) 愛殺 18

Part of Focus Hong Kong September 2026
Screened in partnership with Focus Hong Kong
Patrick Tam, Hong Kong, 1981, 91m.

A key early work from acclaimed Hong Kong New Wave director Patrick Tam after he made the move from TV to film, Love Massacre is a delightfully subversive and experimental whirlwind which shifts gears and genres throughout as it plays upon the screen image of star Brigitte Lin. Long-unavailable, the film has been stunningly restored in 4K by M+ from a preserved 35mm print, and screens in the original director’s cut and in Tam’s intended aspect ratio, bringing to life its incredibly creative visuals and bold use of colour.

Shot in the US, the film follows college student Ivy (Brigitte Lin) as she tries to help her friend Joy (Tina Liu), who’s depressed and delirious after a breakup, inadvertently becoming involved with her married brother Chu Chung (Chang Kuo-Chu). Suffering from a hereditary mental illness, Chung eventually spirals into violence as he breaks into Ivy’s dormitory and goes on a killing spree.
