Jim Henson, USA, 1986, 102m.

As the old saying goes, be careful what you wish for, because it might just come true. Ask Labyrinth's Sarah - who tells her little brother she wants goblins to take him away, and then finds that they have done! In order to get him back, she has to find her way through a magical maze - one in which she comes across lots of strange creatures and tough challenges set for her by the Goblin King (played by legendary pop star David Bowie in one of the most remarkable wigs in movie history).

Directed by legendary puppetmaster Jim Henson, and starring a young Jennifer Connelly alongside David Bowie, as the bewitching Goblin King, Labyrinth was a commercial disappointment upon release and received mixed reviews. It found success on VHS, however, and the film’s hand-made aesthetic ensured its longevity and cult status. This peculiar fantasy-adventure boasts a spellbinding score from Trevor Jones (including some memorable Bowie songs), ethereal conceptual costume designs by Brian Froud and a mind-bending finale based on Escher’s staircase.
