Blood Simple 15

Joel Coen, USA, 1984, 97m.

The Cinematologists return to the Garden Cinema for the final time in 2022 to screen the Coen Brothers' debut film Blood Simple (1984). This Neo-noir road movie does not only signal the emergence of the Coens as chroniclers of the paradoxical strangeness of American culture, but also captures the pulpy postmodern aesthetics of 80s independent cinema. The commanding presence M. Emmet Walsh, who Roger Ebert has called the “poet of Sleaze” reminds us of his often-overlooked qualities as an actor and regular Coen brothers collaborator Francis McDormand is given here arguably her breakout role.

Regular host of The Cinematologists Dario Llinares is join by Producer-Director James Dean to discuss the many horrors and pleasures of this labyrinthine, low budget classic.
