Bastards 18

Claire Denis, France, Germany, 2013, 100m.

Presented by Cinema Rising.

In this provocative thriller from Claire Denis, Vincent Lindon plays Marco, a ship captain who moves to Paris after his brother-in-law’s suicide and the hospitalisation of his niece. He believes Eduourd Laporte, a business tycoon played by Michel Subor, is responsible. Renting an apartment in the same building as Laporte’s mistress, Marco plots his revenge.

Denis’s genre experiments, which are as disparate as Trouble Every Day and High-Life, are always compelling, but Bastards is perhaps her most assured, and most challenging hybrid: a potent blend of noir and European arthouse aesthetics that draws inspiration from William Faulkner’s Sanctuary. The result is a startling examination of wealth and power that’s more relevant now than ever.

Cast:
Vincent Lindon, Chiara Mastroianni, Julie Bataille
