The Garden Cinema View:

If you are a fan of Kogonada's essayistic work, prepare for a surprise with his latest offering. This is essentially a hopeful middle aged romance about second chances, wrapped in pop aesthetics and familiar ideas that broaden the audience while slightly compromising its more sophisticated themes.

A Big Bold Beautiful Journey asks for a huge suspension of disbelief to even engage with the story's construct - and in this way, Kogonada takes some bold risks. He also once again proves himself to be a masterful actors' director, with Robbie and Farrell both delivering strong performances of convincing middle-aged vulnerability.

While this populist turn may disappoint the Kogonada purists, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey still demonstrates his ability to work within mainstream conventions while retaining some of his wildly imaginative cinematic sensibility.
