Under the Fig Trees PG

Erige Sehiri, Tunisia, France, Switzerland, 2021, 92m.

Among the trees, young women and men working the summer harvest develop new feelings, flirt, try to understand each other, find - and flee - deeper connections.

The Garden Cinema View:

A quiet and quotidian film that belies a deeper reflection on the hopes and anxieties of seasonal fruit pickers in Tunisia. The fig orchard is a place of physical labour and shaded respite from the Summer heat; but it also stands as a performance space where cultural anxieties are played out metonymically. A gently remarkable film which gives a platform and lends an ear to a collection of characters living on the margins.
