A Chinese Ghost Story III is the final installment of the trilogy (along with the original film and A Chinese Ghost Story II), and its most exuberant and playful entry, reuniting director Ching Siu-tung and producer Tsui Hark for another dazzling blend of romance, fantasy and martial arts. In this concluding chapter, Tony Leung replaces Leslie Cheung as the male lead in a lighter and more comedic role of his than usual.

When two monks try to transport a statue of Buddha, they encounter thieves, which forces them to go to the Orchid Temple. They then meet Lotus, a ghost, and find out she serves the evil Tree Devil. The Tree Demon's seal, as cast by the monk Yin in the original film, only lasts for 100 years. Now 100 years later, the Tree Demon awakens…
