The first Czech-Vietnamese feature film, Summer School, 2001 is a tender and deeply personal coming-of-age story exploring family, identity and belonging across cultures.
Seventeen-year-old Kien returns to the Czech Republic after spending ten years in Vietnam. Reunited with a mother he barely remembers and a younger brother who isn't ready to forgive or forget, Kien must navigate family expectations, first love and the complexities of growing up between two worlds.
Drawing on director Dužan Duong's own experiences, Summer School, 2001 offers a rare and authentic portrait of the first Vietnamese generation to grow up in the Czech Republic. Both intimate and universal, the film explores migration, adolescence, family relationships and the search for identity with warmth, humour and emotional honesty.
Following acclaimed festival screenings and its UK premiere at Raindance Film Festival, Star Nhà Ease, in association with the Czech Centre, is proud to present this special screening as part of the film's UK theatrical rollout.
The screening will include a special recorded introduction from director Dužan Duong.
