All About Ah-Long was one of the biggest box-office successes of its year and remains one of the most beloved films in Johnnie To’s filmography. Made well before the founding of Milkyway Image in 1996, it belongs to his commercial period while already revealing qualities that would later define his work: emotional restraint, a deep interest in male relationships, and an underlying sense of fate.

Former motorcycle racer Ah-Long (Chow Yun-fat) raises his young son Porky on his own after a troubled past separates him from the boy’s mother, Por Por (Sylvia Chang). Living modestly but happily together, father and son share an unbreakable bond until Por Por unexpectedly re-enters their lives after a decade away. As old wounds resurface and difficult choices loom, Ah-Long is forced to confront what it truly means to love and let go.
