An Autumn’s Tale 15

Part of Hong Kong Golden Age 1985-1997
Mabel Cheung, Hong Kong, 1987, 98m.

The screening on 20 July will be introduced by Tom Cunliffe (UCL).

An Autumn’s Tale, the second instalment of Mabel Cheung’s acclaimed 'Migration Trilogy' (along with The Illegal Immigrant and Eight Taels of Gold),  was created in collaboration with her long-time screenwriting partner Alex Law and inspired by their experiences as Hong Kong students in New York. Shot on location in New York City, it stars Chow Yun-fat in one of his defining post–A Better Tomorrow roles, alongside Cantopop idol Danny Chan and screen icon Cherie Chung.

Set in New York, the film follows Jennifer (Cherie Chung), a young Hong Kong student who arrives expecting to reunite with her boyfriend (Danny Chan), only to discover his infidelity. Forced to rely on her distant relative Samuel Pang (Chow Yun-fat), a rough-edged but kind-hearted immigrant, she gradually forms an unexpected bond with him. Capturing both the hardships and emotional resilience of the Hong Kong diaspora with humour and melancholy, the film remains one of the most beloved classics of Hong Kong cinema.
