The Battle of Algiers 15

Gillo Pontecorvo, Italy, Algeria, 1966, 121m.

The Battle of Algiers was proposed by our members Gina Goody and Kate Matheson, who write: 'it is a powerful film that is seldom screened. We were wondering how it would be perceived nowadays, particularly if the allure of Mon Capitaine would still be so enduring...'

1950s Algeria: Ali La Pointe is recruited to join the National Liberation Front, becoming involved in its armed insurgency against the French colonial powers. French paratrooper Colonel Mathieu is entrusted with squelching the uprisings. As violence escalates on each side, no act is too unthinkable.

Please note, the screening on Wednesday 5 November is our free members' screening, while the one on Thursday 13 is a regular screening that is open to the general public.

Cast:
Brahim Hadjadj, Jean Martin, Yacef Saâdi, Fouzia El Kader
