The Ladykillers PG

Alexander Mackendrick, UK, 1955, 91m.

The Ladykillers screening on Wednesday October 25 will be followed by a discussion group at the cinema's bar hosted by Dr. Grazia Ingravalle and Dr. Lawrence Napper.

Mrs. Wilberforce (Katie Johnson) likes to report suspicious behavior to the police. Unaware of her reputation, the dapper thief Professor Marcus (Alec Guinness) rents rooms in the elderly widow's home for himself and his band of cohorts. Posing as a string quintet, the thieves pull off a bank robbery, but slip up in front of the old woman as they try to escape. Agreed that they need to murder her, the bumbling crooks wind up double-crossing each other and slowly killing themselves off.

Dr. Lawrence Napper is a senior lecturer in Film Studies in King’s College London. He has published widely on British cinema and silent cinema. His most recent book is 'Silent Cinema: Before the pictures got small' published by Wallflower Press.

Dr. Grazia Ingravalle is Lecturer in British and Minority Cinemas at Queen Mary University of London. She writes about film archives, early cinema, digitisation, and decolonisation in academic journals (such as The Moving Image, Screen, Viewfinder and the JCMS) and her book Archival Film Curatorship: Early and Silent Cinema from Analog to Digital will be out at the end of 2023. Grazia has also worked as curator, focusing on experimental, colonial, and repertoire film programmes.
